Although the Trump administration has paused the proposed 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, part of the broader “Liberation Day” tariffs, for 90 days, ongoing economic uncertainty continues to drive up costs nationwide. Campus dining could soon feel the impact. As food prices climb, so do student concerns about the toll these tariffs could take on their well-being. “Students already have limited access to healthy options, so higher costs could take a toll on both student health and their wallets, especially for those with dietary restrictions,” said Annie Schloss ’27, a public health major. “If food prices in Benson go up, the meal plan should increase dining points accordingly.” Bon Appétit Management Company, which operates the University’s dining services, is working with purchasing partner Foodbuy to secure long-term pricing contracts to help manage cost increases. According to Harvey Smith, resident district manager with Bon Appétit at Santa Clara University, students may experience changes in both pricing and menu variety as imported staples become more expensive or less readily available.  One initiative Bon Appétit has undertaken is expanding its Farm to Fork program, a companywide effort requiring at least 20% of ingredients be purchased from small, local producers within 150 miles of campus kitchens. According to Smith, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on imports, stabilize supply and feature more seasonal ingredients.  “We’re committed to balanced, high-quality meals, even as costs shift,” Smith said. Santa Clara University Dining Services also uses the Consumer Price Index to determine food pricing, which tracks average changes in consumer prices. The University’s dining services says they will notify students of any changes to pricing or service. If tariffs continue, longer-term adjustments may include smaller portion sizes or simplified menus to reflect more locally available foods. With March Madness coming to a close, let’s hear what SCU students have to say about the final predictions.

Many students, staff and faculty have cancelled their break travel plans as Santa Clara University has issued a travel advisory recommending international students and scholars postpone travel outside the United States until further notice.
 The notice applies to students with F-1 and J-1 visas and mentions impacts on spring and summer travel plans. 
"Postpone international travel until more clarity is provided by the federal government," the University stated. The University has already reached out to international students to provide additional instruction.
 “International students also have been advised to carry proof of registration and documentation,” a University official stated in an email to The Santa Clara. The official noted that international students should carry documentation in paper form, not on their phones, and that the Global Engagement office will continue to provide updates. 

 The University’s advisory follows similar notices from other universities as several cases involving international academics have drawn attention.
 Ranjani Srinivasan, a Columbia University doctoral candidate, fled to Canada after her visa was revoked. The Department of Homeland Security stated she was "involved in activities supporting Hamas, a terrorist organization."
 "It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live & study in the United States of America," Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary wrote on X. "When you advocate for violence and terrorism that privilege should be revoked."
 "I do think there's a crazy climate of fear in universities," Srinivasan said in an interview. The Trump administration is reportedly reviewing a potential travel ban affecting citizens from up to 43 countries.
 "Every day, I open my phone and see new changes to policies that affect students like me," said an international student from India pursuing an M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering who requested anonymity.

UAB averages 6.5 made 3-pointers per game this season, 0.8 fewer makes per game than Santa Clara allows. TOP PERFORMERS: Bal is averaging 13.3 points and 3.1 assists for the Broncos. Elijah Mahi ‘26 is averaging 12.0 points over the last 10 games. Tyren Moore averages 1.5 made 3-pointers per game for the Blazers, scoring 6.5 points while shooting 38.4% from beyond the arc. Yaxel Lendeborg is averaging 17.2 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, two steals and 1.7 blocks over the last 10 games.
