Women’s Basketball win pair to improve to 9-1 in last 10 games
THE SANTA CLARA
February 25, 2016
The Women’s Basketball team jumped to second place in WCC standings after adding on two more wins to their season.
On Thursday and Saturday at the Leavey Center, the team beat both Loyola Marymount University and Pepperdine University by large margins.
Santa Clara came out with a fire in both games, beating LMU 68-41 and Pepperdine 84-50. They are now 12-4 in conference and 21-6 overall.
“There were so many great moments this past weekend. One of my favorites was when Andraya Flor came in and scored four points versus LMU,” said Head Coach JR Payne. “Marie hitting back to back 3-pointers versus Pepperdine and her lay-up the length of the floor with three seconds left in the third quarter were both pretty awesome moments as well.”
On Thursday, Santa Clara had four players in double figures, as all four had more than 12 points. Taylor Berry led the team with 15 points.
Lori Parkinson had another great game snagging nine rebounds and putting up 14 points.
LMU had a tough game around the rim and lost by 27 points.
On Saturday, Santa Clara took on Pepperdine in a heated matchup.
Marie Bertholdt had a huge game putting up 27 points. She was also active around the rim and snagged 15 total rebounds.
“Overall, our strengths were the same as they’ve been all year long defense and rebounding,” Coach Payne said. “We outrebounded Pepperdine by 22, which is a testament to our team’s toughness and effort on the glass.”
In the first quarter, it was clear that the Broncos wanted the win. They went on a 14-point streak with no response.
The third quarter is when the team really broke away, scoring 28 points. This allowed the team to come away 34 points ahead of Pepperdine.
As the Broncos go into the last two games of the season, they hope to keep the momentum going as they prepare to make a run at an NCAA Tournament bid.
They play Saint Mary’s College at home on Thursday, and play University of the Pacific away on Saturday.
