THE SANTA CLARA
May 3, 2014
Looking for something weird, exciting and different to do this upcoming weekend? Blow off some steam from post-midterm stress at the How Weird Street Faire in San Francisco. Located in the South of Market district between Howard Street and 2nd Street, this annual community street faire is happening for one day only on Sunday, May 4 from 12 p.m. — 8 p.m.
How Weird Street Faire is an eclectic celebration of peace and creativity that features a multitude of artists, musicians, dancers, performers, tech innovators and much more from throughout the Bay Area and all over the world. The faire is a project designed by the non-profit World Peace Through Technology Organization and kicks off the festival season in San Francisco. Think of it as a fun precursor to Bay to Breakers.
Each year, the festival takes on an interesting theme and this year is no exception. Since this year’s festival is on May 4, the faire will be celebrating with an outer space theme called “May the Fourth be with you.”
Visitors are encouraged to dress up in their finest outer space-themed costumes, but really any wacky or exciting outfit will do. But if you are a little overwhelmed to don your favorite Star Wars, alien or Trekkie outfit, don’t worry “Earthling,” any clothes are appropriate.
Be sure to try some of the amazing food and beverages that are scattered throughout the faire and experience some true culinary delights. Or wander in and out of vendor tents to peruse some cool art prints, jewelry, hula-hoops and costumes (just in case you forgot yours at home).
Faire-goers are also invited to enjoy the various bands playing throughout the festival area. This year, there will be 10 stages that will feature a full-range of electronic dance music styles. The faire will also be participating in National Dance Week this year as well as a special Flash Mob performance in celebration of dance. There is also a newly expanded Art Alley this year where visitors can experience live, interactive and local arts that allow you to be the artist as well.
The key to having a positive experience at the How Weird Street Faire is to have an open mind and an open heart. The creativity is endless at this special festival. Admission is by donation only, so spare a few bucks and have a totally weird and awesome time at the How Weird Street Faire this Sunday, and “May the Fourth be with you.”
