Letters to the Editor

The Santa Clara welcomes letters to the editor. Please read the disclaimers and submit using the form below.

A letter to the editor is a written submission that allows readers to respond to published coverage, express opinions, raise concerns or share perspectives on issues affecting the campus community. The Santa Clara welcomes letters from students, faculty, staff, alumni and others in the campus community. Letters should contribute meaningful perspectives to campus-wide discussions and demonstrate clear relevance or news value. All submissions are subject to editorial review, and publication is not guaranteed.

  • Relevance: Letters must address issues relevant to the campus community and offer meaningful perspectives or clear news value.

  • Identification: All submissions must include the author’s full name, graduation year (if applicable), relevant campus affiliation (if applicable) and valid contact information for verification.

  • Editorial standards: Letters must reflect the author’s own views and may not contain defamatory statements, threats, discriminatory harassment, knowingly false information or unsupported claims presented as fact. Personal attacks and irrelevant content may be edited or declined.

  • Anonymous submissions: Unsigned or anonymous letters will generally not be published. Exceptions may be considered by the editor-in-chief when a compelling reason exists to protect the author’s identity. The editorial staff must still be able to verify the author’s identity and assess the letter’s claims.

  • Editing and selection: The Santa Clara reserves the right to edit letters for length, clarity, grammar and style without changing the author’s intended meaning. Editors may request clarification or verification of factual claims. Publication decisions are based on editorial standards, relevance, news value, available space and the newspaper’s editorial needs.

Open letters addressed to the campus community from individuals, groups, departments or organizations may be considered when the editor-in-chief determines they have significant news value.

Letters to the editor may be submitted electronically or in print.
