Construction price tag rises

The cost of new university buildings, including the Library of the 21st Century, will rise from $82 million to about $102 million, University President Paul Locatelli, S.J., said at Convocation Monday.

But instead of adding proposed building plans to the chopping block to scale-back costs, Locatelli said the university will instead raise more money. Administrators said they hope to start construction on the remaining buildings as soon as possible.

The university has raised $322 of the targeted $350 million for the Campaign for Santa Clara, which Locatelli announced in 2002.

The campaign also includes funds for a new building for the Leavey school of business and a new Jesuit residence building to replace Nobili Hall.

New library to be completed in 2007

Construction on the new Library of the 21st Century building will not begin until summer 2007 at the earliest, head of customer services for Orradre library Fred Gertler announced in a campus wide e-mail last week.

Demolition of the current building was originally slated to begin in summer 2005.

Following demolition, it is expected to take at least three years for construction to be completed. An interim site for library materials during construction has not been announced.

Construction on the new Automatic Retrieval System for the Library of the 21st Century was completed in January 2005.
