The Election Committee of the Associated Student Government at Santa Clara University released election results Thursday, Oct. 22 for the First-Year Senate race.
Seven candidates made their case to the student body at the Meet the Candidates event earlier in the week, but only five were ultimately elected to serve the class of 2030—Sebastian Avila Farias ’30, Blaise Barbier ’30, Aiden Joosten ’30, Kate Carnahan ’30 and Anton Do ’30.
The five candidates centered their campaigns around familiar issues—concerns over dining hall variety, increased student engagement and financial assistance.
Goals small and large also topped the ticket. Barbier campaigned on a simple pledge to solve the Benson Memorial Center ice machine depletion issue, while Joosten promised to pursue greater financial transparency for students making payments made to the University.
Do will focus on building a “community driven campus” through ASG, noting a desire to support first-year students who struggle with the transition to campus and finding belonging.
Carnahan ran on a platform of supporting students with dietary restrictions, proposing more variety in Benson meal options and advocating for greater cross-contamination training for staff members.
Avila Farias focused on promoting internship and job opportunities to students, specifically underclassmen, through hosting more frequent career fairs and job-related events.
744 total votes were cast in the First-Year Senate election race. ASG declined TSC’s request for specific vote counts for each candidate, citing that doing so would be contradictory to their policy of inclusivity.
