ASG Hosts Audit and Admin Accountability Discussion
Students provide feedback on the campus safety audit
Associated Student Government (ASG) hosted an Audit and Admin Accountability event on Jan. 19 where students discussed feedback and suggestions for the Campus Safety Services (CSS) audit that ASG will bring to President Kevin O’Brien, S.J. and his cabinet.
ASG President Ciara Moezidis moderated the discussion and ASG Vice President Ann Codiga explained the audit resolution to the meeting attendees.
“The main premises are that we are urging [CSS] to adopt every recommendation from Judge Cordell and that is the baseline of what they should do,” Codiga said. “Then, attaching the feedback that comes out of these conversations as well as...from the feedback form to it.”
Senate Chair Justin Chan expressed his concerns about the release of the audit.
“One of my greatest fears is that we are going to release this resolution, they are going to release their plan along with their reasons for why they are not doing certain things and then say ‘that is it, we are not listening anymore, this is all we are doing,’” Chan said. “I do not want to commit to changes before we have the opportunity to see them.”
At-Large Senator Paola Felix shared some sentiments she had been hearing from other students about the audit.
“Some people thought that the audit recommendations are not a fix, it is a start especially considering the feedback we saw from students from the feedback form,” Felix said. “Though there were only eight and the student population is a lot larger than that, some of the things students have said, I would have never considered and were not considered in the audit.”
Sophomore Senator Angel Lin shared a concern that was brought up during the Multicultural Center Inclusive Excellence Student Advisory Council event repeatedly.
“Even if these means of communication, whether they be committees that keep campus safety accountable with feedback, they do not want all this to fall entirely on students and they would rather it not be their burden to do so,” Lin said.
Senior Senator Hiwad Haider came up with an idea for what students could do, while they wait for the resolutions to be implemented after the passage of the audit.
“It might be a cool idea for some of us to take on a text message, GroupMe, email or other kinds of outreach templates, maybe even a social media sharing template that will help us get support for this,” Haider said. “We should really try to create agency for ourselves [as] one of our biggest challenges is waiting.”
Moezidis let the students know that ASG will continue to edit and organize all the feedback that has been provided and pass the audit.
“Hopefully we will know what progress and what pressure we need to push,” Moezidis said. “But, I do want to show that we are trying to put our best foot forward as ASG members...since I know that a lot of students feel that we need to be better in that regard.”
