[dropcap]M[/dropcap]aybe you’ve heard of Baby Shower, but odds are you haven’t. That’s because the duo hadn’t performed in front of an audience until last Saturday at a house on Bellomy Street. The band consists of guitar player and lead vocalist James Seely, as well as bassist Greg Miller. Both are seniors at Santa Clara.They debuted in front of fellow students at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. It was only fitting that it began to drizzle as the two performed a 45-minute set of both original and cover songs, with a style they describe as a fusion between rock and dance. Following the show, the musicians spoke on the origin and future of Baby Shower, the latest act in Santa Clara’s garage band scene.The Santa Clara: How long have you guys been playing instruments?Greg Miller: I started playing bass my freshman year of high school. My older brother played guitar and my best friend played drums, so it was only natural that I played bass to complete the group.James Seely: I picked up guitar in the sixth grade, but my first time performing was when I was seven. I sang by myself at my aunts wedding, it was great.TSC: When did you guys decide to create the band?GM: Last year when I realized that (Seely) had brought his guitar out to school. I immediately had my bass shipped out and we started jamming together, mostly playing covers of songs.JS: I think a big moment for us was when we were playing a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away” in our garage at Brown house. A girl from another band on campus was walking by and stopped to listen. Then she asked us if we were in a band ourselves. Also Nikki Lauda and Andy Kaufman.JS: James Brown. He was the first artist I ever saw in concert.TSC: What is your favorite part about performing?GM: Throwing something at the audience that they wouldn’t expect, but is still familiar. Like when we opened up with the James Bond rift on Saturday.TSC: Where does the name “Baby Shower” come from?JS: The true story is too stupid to tell.TSC: When can we expect another performance?GM: Check the weather forecast.JS: Definitely in the spring.
