Baseball Stuns Stanford at Home
Santa Clara pushes winning streak to five with an upset win against No. 25 Stanford
College baseball has just begun, and the Broncos are in full swing. They have started their season red-hot with a 5-0 record and a huge upset win 3-2 against No. 25 Stanford on Tuesday night.
“This win was huge for us,” senior second baseman Jason Dicochea said. “It was another team win where everyone dominated their role but also proved that anybody on this team can be a difference maker from game to game.”
The Broncos took the lead in the bottom of the second inning following a two-run homer from sophomore Dawson Brigman. They tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off of a sacrifice fly from senior Austin Reyes.
Lights out pitching from seniors Travis Howard and Alex Waldsmith held the Cardinals scoreless for the first seven innings.
Stanford finally got on the board in the eighth inning with a two-out double to trim the lead to 3-2, but their late momentum fell short, and the Broncos secured the win.
All the top hitters from last season have returned for the Broncos, including Dicochea, first baseman Ryan McCarthy and outfielder Jake MacNichols.
However, the preseason rankings have placed Santa Clara at the bottom of the West Coast Conference (WCC), and despite their perfect start to the 2020 campaign, they will need to improve upon its .223 team batting average from last year in order to move up in the WCC standings.
Santa Clara hits the road to take on No. 5 Georgia on Friday, Feb. 21 at noon PST.
