Basketball Star Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Santa Clara basketball's leading scorer Kevin Foster was arrested and starting point guard Evan Roquemore was cited early Sunday morning in separate alcohol-related incidents.

Foster, 21, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at 2:41 a.m. on Sunday at the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Scott Boulevard, according to a public report by the Santa Clara Police Department. The arrest came just hours after Foster had scored 22 points in a loss against Saint Mary's at the Leavey Center.

Roquemore, 19, was cited at a separate time for an "open container in public" on the 900 block of Bellomy Street.

SCPD confirmed both cases and Sergeant Ray Carreira said that Foster's charges are under review by the district attorney's office.

Starters Niyi Harrison and John McArthur were also disciplined for an unspecified violation of team rules. Roquemore, Harrison and McArthur were not in the starting lineup for the Broncos' next game against Loyola Marymount on Monday night, but all three players saw action against the Lions.

Foster, however, was not in uniform and is being "withheld from competition pending the outcome of the University's student judicial process," according to a statement released by the athletic department.

"We respect the Santa Clara student judicial process and we will work with Kevin to help him through this," said Santa Clara Head Coach Kerry Keating in the aforementioned statement.

The 2011-12 Student-Athlete Handbook stipulates that "a student-athlete is a public figure. Conduct both on and off the field reflects on teammates, coaches, and the institution as well as the individual. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions are considered just cause for removal from a team."

The loss of Foster would be devastating for the Broncos. The redshirt junior, who led the nation in three-pointers last season, is currently averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game while shooting 39 percent from behind the arc. The team is already without last season's leading rebounder, Marc Trasolini, after he suffered a knee injury during a summer exhibition game in Canada.
