Benson Gets a Facelift
Benson Memorial Hall has unveiled an array of name and menu changes in its eateries to open the 2023-2024 school year. Popular spots formerly known as Pacrim Express, Pacrim Penne and 540 have all undergone rebranding, now named “The Spice Market,” “The Trattoria” and “The Slice,” while keeping their menu themes intact and expanding on available options. Meanwhile, other stations, like La Parilla, have added additional options to their menu, such as chicken enchiladas with salsa verde, tortas, and chips and guacamole.
“When I walked into Benson this year I was shocked and ecstatic,” said Jonathan Kimyai, a returning sophomore majoring in Management Information Systems. “I can’t believe all the things they added. They have the Chef’s Table, a completely new place with build-your-own Korean Bibimbap, which is amazing.”
With a newfound emphasis on quality ingredients, students feel some stations in Benson have stepped up their game, especially for breakfast options.
“The Mission Bakery has really stocked up on new higher quality options with the citrus bread, marble loaves and overnight oats.” said Blake Tretter, a returning sophomore.
Despite these benefits, returning students have given mixed reactions to the new changes.
“The Spice Market has less variety than Pacrim Express did last year,” Tretter said. “I feel like for the last few weeks the food has consistently been similar South Asian cuisines like curry as opposed to rotating through different Asian cuisines like ramen or phở.”
Other concerns have been raised about La Parilla’s insufficient vegetarian protein options and modifications through the mobile ordering system.
“I feel like La Parilla no longer offers as much customization through their app with things like burritos and burrito bowls, which is disappointing,” said Kimyai.
These new additions are only a continuation of Santa Clara’s recent efforts to improve the overall dining experience for students living on campus. Last year, the university debuted new dining options like Simply Oasis, a station using only whole, simple ingredients free from gluten and the top nine allergens, and food-truck Wednesdays, when various mobile restaurants visit campus near O’Connor Hall each week and accept dining points.
