Broken Pipe Floods Benson Basement

Water damage still being cleaned up after Monday’s floodSophie MattsonTHE SANTA CLARAOctober 14, 2014BensonFlood_small (1)[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he basement of the Benson Memorial Center flooded last night after a water line in the Campus Post Office exploded.The pipe burst at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, flooding the post office, the office of the Residential Learning Community Association, the Cellar Market, the lower Benson lounge area and the basement elevator.According to an email sent out to students by Matt Cameron, assistant vice provost for student life, the extent of the water damage to the elevator, which is currently out of service, is yet to be determined.Benson Memorial Center’s main water line was shut down last night in order to carry out repairs, according to Cameron. Additionally, dining services closed around 8 p.m and all of the building’s bathrooms were closed as repairs were underway.The Post Office, the RLCA office and the basement lounge were still closed for cleaning as of Tuesday.Jeffrey Charles, facilities director, said that the flooding damaged ceiling tiles and the floor in the Post Office, and that it will take several days to fix the damage.Charles added that the cost of the damage to Benson Memorial Center has not been determined. Contact Sophie Mattson at smattson@scu.edu or call (408) 554-4852.
