This past Saturday, the women’s basketball team continued its excellent season after beating the University of San Francisco 68-57, outscoring the Dons 25-13 in the fourth quarter.

“First three quarters were what we expected,” said Head Coach JR Payne. “But after Savvy hit those three pointers the team ignited.”

The game was largely back and forth until the Broncos took command.

Freshman guard Savanna Hanson hit three consecutive jump shots, extending the lead to 10.

Savanna had 15 total points in the game.

San Francisco held a lead for most of the game with the Broncos on their tail.

The first quarter the Dons were up by three, but the gap narrowed as the game progressed–the third quarter ended with the Broncos down by just one, 44-43.

Anna Seilund, freshman for San Francisco, made four three pointers throughout the game and ended with the team high of 15 points.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Dons made a quick three and were up 47-44.

But Santa Clara, fueled by Savanna’s play, pushed back throughout the last few minutes and ended with a win by a margin of 11 points.

The first half was neck and neck as well as physical–15 of the Broncos’ points came from free throws.

The second half had better shooting and both the Broncos and the Dons took more chances.

The teams scored twenty points each in just the third quarter.

The Broncos were able to keep Taylor Proctor, junior for the Dons and one of the WCC’s top players, to only nine points and seven rebounds throughout the game.

She has averaged 19 points per game this season and is typically a major force in every matchup.

Overall, the Broncos won the the game with defense. They totalled 20 total steals throughout the matchup, seven more than the team has averaged this season.

San Francisco had a total of 30 turnovers throughout the game.

Santa Clara’s senior Devin Hudson, only in the game for twenty minutes, put up 17 points and seven of the 41 team rebounds.

The Broncos are now 15-5 overall and 6-3 in conference.

They have averaged 65.4 points per game and 41.4 rebounds this season.

For comparison, last year the team went 10-18 overall.

Santa Clara is tied in the standings with Gonzaga University, who they play this Thursday at home.

The team hopes for redemption from their loss in Washington earlier this year, where they lost 53-44.

Saturday afternoon, the team will play Portland at home as well.

Portland is 0-9 this season in conference.
