BYU Sweeps Santa Clara Softball

Painful season almost over for Santa Clara

Photo by Don Jedlovec[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Santa Clara softball team continues to flounder, dropping all three games on their trip to Brigham Young University. The series was the last away games Santa Clara will play this season.

“This has been a really tough season due to several injuries,” said Head Coach Mize. “Top pitcher Ciara Gonzales being out for the season was a huge setback for us as well as Ellie Fisher who is just coming back after being out for seven weeks.”

On Friday, Santa Clara played back-to-back games at Larry H. Miller stadium.

The Broncos were scoreless until the fourth inning, where they put up three runs. But Santa Clara was ultimately unsuccessful in clinching the win. The series opener was the closest game of the weekend, where the Broncos lost 4-3.

Later that day, the Cougars came out hard and teed off on the Broncos. BYU had three home runs, two of which were hit out of the park in the bottom of the first. The game ended early in the fifth 15-4.

Saturday showed similar results. BYU had a slow start but scored six runs in the fourth to come away with a 9-1 win.

The only offense from the Broncos came from freshman Morgan Modesto–who blasted her fourth homerun of the season.

Despite the team’s  losses this season, the Broncos can take solace in their underclassmen, like Modesto, continuing to develop. Santa Clara is losing just three seniors and the return of young players should help build the program.

The Bronco’s season will come to a close this weekend as they host Saint Mary’s. The three game series kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday.
