Cellar Market Will No Longer Accept University Dining Points for Non-Food Items

The Cellar Market will no longer accept University Dining Points for the purchase of non-food items to comply with California state sales tax law.

The Cellar is a small grocery store in the Benson basement. Items sold by The Cellar include edible items such as snacks, drinks, and sandwiches and small non-food items such as cooking supplies, according to the University website.

“Tangible items” such as giftware, toys, and clothing are subject to California sales tax, according to the California Tax Service Center. However, some food products and other products meant for human consumption are exempt from the tax.

To comply with California sales tax, the University updated its policy to not accept dining points for non-food items, according to Resident District Manager for SCU Dining Services Harvey Smith.
