The Wilde Ones: Oscar Wilde, Anarchism, and the Politics of Homosexuality

In 1895 Oscar Wilde was convicted for the crime of homosexuality. Among the few people who rose to his defense were the anarchists. The anarchist critique of Wilde's conviction constituted the first sustained articulation of a politics of homosexuality in the United States. In the decades that followed Wilde's conviction, the anarchists continued to speak to the social and ethical place of same-sex desire. A lecture on this topic will be held by Terence Kissack, Ph.D., American History, CUNY Graduate Center in the Benson Parlors D and E from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to all. Music at Noon: STEEL PAN - PANORAMA

Steelbands emerge from the turbulent, misunderstood reaction of a determined underclass to develop a new musical art-form. At first despised and suppressed by colonial authorities in Trinidad, Steelbands have since come to represent the irrepressible spirit of Caribbean Carnival.
