Santa Clara coach Dick Davey received a contract extension Monday, a day after the Broncos' season ended in the West Coast Conference tournament semifinals to rival Saint Mary's.

"I appreciate the university's confidence in me," Davey said. "This has always been an institution that has been very loyal to its faculty and staff. ... I look forward to continuing my career at this great institution."

Athletic director Dan Coonan, hired in late August, had said he hoped to get something done soon with the 13th-year coach, whose existing contract expired after this season.

"Dick is a terrific person and an outstanding coach and mentor who has represented Santa Clara University with a high degree of class, style and loyalty," Coonan said.

Davey is 217-164 since taking over as head coach in 1992. He joined the Broncos' staff in 1977.

Santa Clara finished 15-16 this season and third in the WCC, losing to the Gaels 69-64 in Sunday night's conference semifinals.

The Broncos started the season by beating North Carolina in November and also defeated Stanford.
