Dining Guide

By Andrew Hardenbrook

If you like sandwiches then you'll love Zanottos. Tucked in the back of this friendly family market is a deli producing sandwiches and meats that go beyond all expectations. On average the sandwiches range between $4 and $5 (depending on the weight) and they are well worth every penny. My regular sandwich is the Oven Gold Turkey on the rye bread, which I find able to hold a massive amount of meat and toppings better than wheat or white. However, everybody has his or her own favorite combo.

If sandwiches are not your favorite lunchtime meal, Zanottos also has six freshly made soups. Usually about three of them will display the calorie content on the label for those heath-conscience shoppers. In addition, Zanottos has a salad bar; however, it is rather small and I would not recommend going just for a salad.

The ordering system differs from that of most delis, but I find it to be a vast improvement. Instead of waiting in line, you fill out a card with all the delicious contents you plan to have on your sandwich. After you turn in the card into the deli attendant, you sit back and wait for them to call your name. The main advantage to this system is that you only have to wait to turn in you card, which is significantly shorter than waiting in the sandwich line at Benson. In addition, while waiting to hear your name, you are free to browse the family market's vast selection and pick out some chips, soda, fruit, or anything else you want to accompany your sandwich.

So stop settling for the deli at Safeway and the sandwiches of Benson, Zanottos is only a five-minute drive from campus and offers a great change of pace. ****$
