First Serve: Bronco Men’s Tennis Kicks Off the Season
Santa Clara Broncos men’s tennis started the 2025 season with an ace on the maroon and white courts at Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara, California. Six players competed in 9 singles and doubles matches, one match resulting in an “Unfinished,” giving the Broncos the 6-1 team victory over the Sacramento State Hornets.
Tiago Boschmans ’27 gained the first singles victory, sweeping Sacramento State’s Miles Whitehead 6-0 in back-to-back sets—giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead. Following Boschmans’ lead, University of California Berkeley transfer John Kim ’26 took home a third point for the Broncos, giving the team momentum to finish the day strong.
With three of the nine players on the roster transferring into Santa Clara University, it seems as if the chemistry in doubles was not hard to come by. The Broncos’ Watanabe Eriksson ’25 and Lukas Maskow ’27 partnered up to take down Martin Duris ‘28 and Miles Whitehead 6-1 on court three.
Sacramento State’s solo point came when Henry Lamchinniah ’27 beat Maskow in a closely-contested three-set singles match. However, doubles partners John Kim ’26 and Luca Bluett ’28 took down Lamchinniah and his doubles partner, Hayden Rand ’25, 6-4 on court one.
Dropping 2 sets in the match, The Broncos won in dominant fashion. The Broncos look towards their next match as they travel to “Big Ten” opponent University of Oregon, carrying this match's energy into the first serve at 10 a.m. PST on Jan. 19.
