From Finn FINNesser to D1
When Jaiden Windell decided to pursue Division 1 soccer, his life took a turn. Windell’s work ethic and innate talent allowed him to join the Santa Clara University’s men’s soccer team this season despite not being directly recruited.
At the age of three, Windell developed a strong interest in soccer, which he has pursued for 16 years. He always aspired to play at the greatest level, and his commitment only grew stronger with time. Reflecting on why he wanted to compete at the Division I level, Windell said "I have been putting so much time and effort into it; I just want to see how far I can take it." His involvement in high school competitions and showcases—where he witnessed firsthand the skill and tenacity needed to succeed in NCAA soccer—further stoked this desire.
Windell loved playing with his intramural team, which was jokingly called the “Finn FINNessers,” prior to moving up to the Division 1 squad. Even though he didn't have the chance to play as a freshman—as his path to the team was not conventional—he values the previous experience he received.
Windell found a balance between the demands of soccer and academics, which is essential for any student-athlete to succeed. He stresses the value of time management: "Prioritizing is the most important thing, don’t procrastinate, just get your stuff done as soon as you get it." This strategy has shown to be extremely helpful as Windell commits to intense training and competition while trying to preserve his academic goals.
Windell’s integration into the squad has not gone unnoticed by senior captain Yoni Aidlberg.
“Jaiden has become an important asset to our team. He is a very quick, smart and talented player. When he plays, he is just electric,” exclaimed Aidlberg.
Windell also acknowledges the important lessons he has learned as he looks back on his journey thus far.
"You have to give your best in both school and soccer; hard work doesn't come easy."
He stresses that, while skill is important, what really sets athletes apart at this level is their commitment. Windell enjoys his experience more today since he feels like he belongs with his teammates: "On and off the field, it's a fantastic bond; it's a family.”
Windell embraces the adventure ahead while being committed to his ambitions as he continues to forge his way in collegiate soccer. With the support of his teammates, this rising star in Santa Clara Athletics has a bright future ahead, paving the way for success on and off the field. One thing is certain—Windell is only beginning his journey. Only time will tell how far he will go.
