Guest professor to discuss the beauty of Math with BAMA

Tonight, at 7:30 in Daly Science 207, the Bay Area Mathematical Adventures (BAMA) will hold its first fall event to promote the understanding of mathematics. The event will feature Michael Starbird, a teacher of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin.The focus of Starbird's talk will be Geometry and how it can be beautiful. Starbird works to make mathematics into a more relatable and understandable subject. According to Professor Frank Farris, who heads the steering committee for BAMA, Starbird shows the fun in mathematics to bring a new level of enrichment to the subject."It's meant for student who maybe have a high school level understanding of math," said Farris. "I think a lot of people think of math in terms of number crunching," he said. "This is meant to show the beauty in math." According to Farris, the event will have a fun and festive atmosphere.BAMA is a steering committee that promotes events based on the promotion of mathematics by Santa Clara University and San Jose State University, as well as the American Institute of Mathematics and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. There are three events in the fall and three in the winter.The target audience for BAMA is talented and interested high school level mathematics student, but students of all ages and skills are welcome and encouraged to attend these events. BAMA brings in the most talented and recognized mathematicians around the world to encourage learning in the field of mathematics.The event will be tonight at 7:30 in Daly Science room 207. The lecture is free and open for all students to attend.
