Highs and Lows of Men’s Soccer Senior Night
Six seniors were recognized in a pre-game ceremony as Santa Clara University’s men’s soccer team prepared to face the Loyola Marymount Lions in their final home game at Stevens Stadium. Despite the spirited atmosphere, the night ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat against LMU.
Yoni Aidlberg, Florian Deletioglu, Malte Furst, Alvaro Gironda, Brennan Mallett and Noah Bohane were honored before a back-and-forth battle. Bronco’s defender Naji Elder headed in a cross from midfielder Will Wiersdorf in the 66th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul.
The majority of the match was played in the midfield and the only shortcoming for the Broncos came with 36 seconds remaining in the game. Loyola freshman Daniel Idiakhoa netted a chip over goalie Jack Stoecker, giving the Lions just their second away win of the season.
Captain Yoni Aidlberg tried to stay composed and not get too emotional on senior night. He was grateful for what playing soccer at Santa Clara University had given him and appreciated the chance to walk to the center of the pitch with his family prior to the match.
Aidlberg had the option of attending Santa Clara University upon graduating high school at Bellarmine College Preparatory, but chose Lehigh University instead. The culture and atmosphere at Santa Clara University was more inviting and appealing than his previous school, so he transferred after his fall season.
He noted that everything you need is provided as a Bronco, from equipment to resources for both mental and physical support. Although Aidlberg transferred, he fit right into the team as if he began his college career at Santa Clara.
Aidlberg added that student athletes are always balancing school and sport. Learning to overcome adversity helped him with whatever comes next. By continuing to perform at the level he does, he hopes for a career on the professional level; he knows that can be accomplished.
The Broncos, with a 5-7-3 overall record in the West Coast Conference, finish their season on the road up at nearby University of San Francisco on November 16. With six seniors set to graduate, the next generation of leaders will be pivotal in carrying forward the team’s legacy.
