I Want This Forever: APB Hosts Bryce Vine

Photos from a memorable night in Locatelli

Santa Clara music lovers will not soon forget the evening of May 9. The Locatelli Student Center played host to an electric mix of genres and drew an enthusiastic crowd of students–a surprising turnout for a Tuesday night in the usually silent concrete building.

The opening act, popular student band 3pm Oats, warmed up the crowd after a late start. Their usual, surf-rocky sound excited students--they've begun to recognize the Oats’ repertoire. The energy in the room was palpable as the crowd chanted the names of songs they wanted to hear next. The performers' spirit and enthusiasm were infectious and set the tone for the night’s headliner.

After no small amount of chanting, Bryce Vine took the stage and delivered an incredible performance, interacting with the crowd, who responded with a devotedness that was displayed in cardboard signs and Beatlemania-esque screeches.

The artist struck a sentimental chord with students graduating this year, performing nostalgic-sounding hits including "Sour Patch Kids," "Sunflower Seeds" and "Nostalgia.” Reminding us to never let go of our inner child, the songs pushed graduates to reflect on their experiences growing into adulthood through the ups and downs of their years in college.

The emotional connection between the performers and the graduating students was particularly moving and highlighted the power music has in connecting people in meaningful ways.

Bryce Vine's charisma and connection to the crowd were evident throughout the night as he effortlessly transitioned between his hits, keeping the energy high. The small–yet mighty–crowd sang along to every word and cheered faithfully throughout the night.

Ultimately, the smaller venue allowed for a more intimate and personal experience, and both acts took full advantage of it. The mood was electric and exciting, leaving the audience yearning for more.
