Iowa Caucus Causes Chaos

While it still remains too early to declare a winner in the Iowa caucuses, 86 percent of the precincts reporting have put Mayor Pete Buttigieg in the lead. Buttigieg is trailed closely by Sen. Bernie Sanders who is 1.3 percentage points behind. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is third followed by Joe Biden and Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

The results have been delayed since the caucuses took place on Monday, Feb. 3. The reported cause of the delay has been technical issues. Specifically, the Iowa Democratic Party said that an app created to compile and report caucus results malfunctioned due to a coding issue. They added that there were no signs of hacking. As a result, caucus meeting results are now being tallied on paper and being collected from across the state in-person.

The two current front runners, Buttigieg and Sanders represent the two ends of their party’s current ideology. Sanders identified as a democratic socialist and has been a progressive for decades. Buttigieg is representative of the moderate wing of the Democratic Party.

While still waiting for results, all candidates have left for New Hampshire where the first primary will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
