No. 2 Stanford beats Santa Clara baseball in 14 innings

BASEBALL
Stanford 12, Santa Clara 8
After a five-hour battle, the Broncos finally succumbed to the Cardinal Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium after 14 innings of play. The Broncos' record is now 19-24. 15 different pitchers were called upon during the game. Anthony Rea pitched a career high five and one-third innings, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out six batters.
Santa Clara 6, Saint Mary's 5
The Bronco baseball team scored six runs in the first two innings as the Broncos outlasted the Gaels in the series-opener at Buck Shaw on Friday. Freshman Kellen McConnell earned the victory for the Broncos and junior closer Anthony Rea earned his 11th save of the year, which ranks second in the nation among all Division I schools.
Saint Mary's 9, Santa Clara 5
The Broncos stranded seven runners in their loss to Saint Mary's in game two of their three-game series on Saturday. Offensively, Santa Clara was led by Nic Crosta, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two solo home runs. Ryan Chiarelli went 3-for-5 in the game and is a stellar 6-for-9 in the two games against Saint Mary's. Ã
Santa Clara 14, Saint Mary's 6
Crosta hit two home runs for the second consecutive game and drove in eight runs as the team overwhelmed Saint Mary's on Sunday. John Redmond (4-2) got the win after allowing just one hit in four and one-third innings. The Broncos improved their record to 19-23 on the season and 8-10 in WCC games.
Nic Crosta Named National Player of the Week
Crosta won both national and conference player of the week honors after batting .615 with 10 RBI and six runs scored against Saint Mary's. The University of Texas transfer was named one of four players selected by Collegiate Baseball as Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, and he was also named the West Coast Conference Rawlings Player of the Week.
SOFTBALL
Santa Clara 3, San Diego 1
The Broncos won the first of two games against San Diego on Saturday. Forman-Lau (20-16) earned the win for the Broncos by striking out 11 Torero batters and allowing only six hits.
Santa Clara 7, San Diego 1
In their second game of the day, the Broncos took an early lead over San Diego, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Santa Clara added to their lead by scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth and one run in the top of the seventh. Liz Courter got the win.
Santa Clara 9, San Diego 0
Forman-Lau threw a perfect game for the Broncos on Sunday against San Diego, striking out nine of the 15 Toreros she faced. Sophomore outfielder Jessica Clee hit a grand slam in the second inning to provide offense.
Santa Clara 5, San Diego 4
Santa Clara won the second game on Sunday to improve their record to 26-23 overall and 12-4 in the PCSC. After trailing by two runs, Angela Kabanuck got a clutch hit that helped Santa Clara come back to win the game.
MEN'S TENNIS
Santa Clara 4, Saint Mary's 1
The men's tennis team opened the 2004 West Coast Conference Championship with a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's at the Degheri Tennis Center on Friday. Bobby Rasmussen won his match 6-0, 6-2 and Gernot Fischer earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position. Francisco Zepponi clinched the victory at No. 5 singles in a second-set tiebreaker.
San Diego 4, Santa Clara 3
No. 40 San Diego defeated the Broncos in the semifinals of the WCC Championships. Erich Chen and Fischer paired together for an 8-6 doubles victory. Chen's doubles win marked No. 62 of his career, placing him atop the Bronco record book for combined doubles victories, surpassing Michael Bruggeman.
Loyola Marymount 4, Santa Clara 2
Loyola Marymount defeated the Broncos, who finished fourth in the WCC Championships, closing the season with an 11-14 record. Fischer earned first-team All-WCC singles honors and Kevin McQuaid earned honorable mention recognition. In doubles, Fischer and Chen received honorable mention All-WCC honors.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Santa Clara 4, Saint Mary's 3
The women's team opened the WCC Championship with a victory on Friday at the Korth Tennis Complex. With the match tied at 3-3, Erika Barnes overcame a first-set loss to clinch the match by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Pepperdine 4, Santa Clara 0
The Broncos lost their match to No. 1 seed Pepperdine in the semifinals of the WCC Championship. Pepperdine is ranked No. 37 in the nation, winning 15 of the past 16 league titles.
Loyola Marymount 4, Santa Clara 0
Without star Janalle Kaloi, the Broncos ended their season losing to Loyola Marymount, finishing in fourth place in the tournament with a 12-12 overall record. Honorable mention All-WCC singles honors were awarded to Kaloi and Kelly Leathers. All-WCC doubles recognition was awarded to Kaloi and Catherine Cochrane, as well as Leathers and Erika Barnes.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
Cal State Bakersfield 12, Santa Clara 8
The women's water polo team opened the 2004 Women's Western Water Polo Association Championship hosted at Loyola Marymount's Burn Recreation and Aquatic Center by losing to Cal State Bakersfield. The No. 4 Roadrunners pulled away from the No. 5-seeded Broncos after an even first period on Friday. Catherine Flynn scored four goals for the Broncos in their losing effort.
Santa Clara 7, Sonoma State 4
Saturday, Flynn led the Broncos again scoring three goals, while Kathleen Hamm contributed two clutch goals to help secure the game for the Broncos and Anne Ginotti recorded six blocks in the cage allowing the Broncos to advance in the consolation bracket.
Santa Clara 13, Chapman 7
Following their win over Sonoma State, the Broncos won their second match of the day. Katy Shumm and Flynn both contributed four goals apiece. After five blocks and five steals, Ginotti was pulled from the game due to a shoulder injury, but was replaced by Alanna Simpkins, who had four saves.
Santa Clara 6, Cal State San Bernardino
Flynn once again led the Broncos in their double-overtime win over the Coyotes to place fifth at the WWWPAs with five goals, including the game-winning goal after three lead changes on Sunday. The Broncos finished the 2004 season with a 21-16 record.
MEN'S CREW
The men's crew won a pair of races over UC Davis Saturday in a meet at the Lexington Reservoir. The varsity eight came from behind to overtake the Aggies with 50 meters to go in the race.
