Review: Hans Boepple Recital

Renowned pianist dazzles in the first faculty performance of the school yearJohn FlynnTHE SANTA CLARAOctober 8, 2015[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n Saturday night, Hans Boepple didn’t say one word. He let his piano do the talking. The dignified faculty member tickled the ivories in classical fashion, whipping through complex melodies and layered arrangements with the practiced ease of a life-long professional.Boepple performed Johannes Brahms’ monumental Variations, Fugue on a theme and suite by Handel, as well as a prelude and Sonata No. 9 by Scriabin, and Chopin’s Ballade in F minor. He flawlessly executed the difficult masterpieces, juggling complex themes and weaving together disparate tones and emotions to create a rich, dynamic mood that entranced his audience. With stunning command of his Steinway piano, Boepple’s fingers skipped through airy opening notes, flew across the keys to build dazzling crests with masterful speed, crisp precision and proper touch. At the end of the performance he received a score of bouqets from admirers and sheepishly blew kisses at the audience with a twinkle in his eye. Boepple debuted his recital career at the age of 10, playing alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and has since accrued a reputation as a renowned master, winning first prize in the International J.S. Bach competition and recording live for National Public Radio.
