[dropcap]M[/dropcap]en’s Crew competed at the Intercollgiate Rowing Association Qualifier Western Sprints Regatta on May 16 in Folsom, Calif.
This was the Bronco’s final regatta of the regular season, marking their last chance to qualify for the Championship Regatta.
The Junior Varsity team came in fifth place out of five teams in their race while the Varsity team held on to take home second place.
The Varsity race, 2,000 meters in length, was a nail-biter. The Broncos crossed the finish line just one second behind the winning shell of Oklahoma City University.
Freshman Grace Anne D’Amico was coxswain, freshman Michael Brewer was stroke, sophomore Ian Crutchlow was seventh seat, freshman Peter Morgan was sixth seat, freshman Chris Szigeti was fifth seat, sophomore James Martino was fourth seat, freshman Sepehr Araghi was third seat, freshman Thatcher Bouck was second seat and freshman Zach Zeller rounded out the team as bow.
The squads also faced stiff competition from Gonzaga University, the University of San Diego and University of California, San Diego.
Though they were unable to take first, the Broncos time was good enough to secure a berth at the IRA Championship Regatta; the final, most competitive meet of the rowing season. It will take place from May 29 to 31 at Lake Mercer, New Jersey.
Meanwhile, the women’s rowing team finished their season earlier in the day at the same venue in the West Coast Conference Championships.
At the end of the day, Gonzaga won the Championship in a tiebreaker over the University of San Diego. The Broncos finished sixth out of seven.
After the meet, sophomore Brittany Peters and junior Molly Walker were named to the 2015 All-WCC Team.
