Santa Clara and San Diego split men's hoops games

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Santa Clara 74, San Diego 69
Junior guard Kyle Bailey's second-half performance sparked the Broncos (13-10 overall, 5-3 WCC) to the conference victory last Thursday at the Leavey Center. Bailey had 23 points and four steals to pace Santa Clara, while junior guard Ethan Rohde poured in 15 points, all coming on three-pointers. Sophomore forward Travis Niesen and junior guard Doron Perkins each netted 10 points in the winning effort.
San Diego 74, Santa Clara 71
The Toreros got revenge on Santa Clara (13-11 overall, 5-4 WCC) and picked up their first conference victory last Saturday at Cox Arena in San Diego. Bailey led the Broncos with a 26-point outburst, including six three-pointers. Perkins dropped in 19 points for the Broncos, who return to action this weekend for road games against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Santa Clara 60, San Diego 52
Junior guard Quinn Thomas had 14 points and eight rebounds, and senior forward Jennie Rondel had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Santa Clara (7-14 overall, 3-5 WCC) to the road victory last Thursday in San Diego. The Broncos will return home for games against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine Thursday and Saturday at the Leavey Center.
BASEBALL
Santa Clara 9, BYU 3
Sophomore Dustin Realini's four RBI sparked the Broncos (3-1 overall) in their home opener last Monday at Buck Shaw Stadium. Senior pitcher Chad Fillinger struck out seven Cougars in three innings of work to pick up the win. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Slorp held BYU in the middle innings and junior Anthony Rea pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
BYU 11, Santa Clara 10
Freshman outfielder Robert Perry was 4-for-6 at the plate with a home run and junior Nic Crosta went 3-for-4 with a homer and four runs scored to lead the Bronco bats last Tuesday against BYU. Sophomore shortstop Michael Lange also belted a solo home run. The Broncos (3-2 overall) will play this weekend against San Diego State in a three-game series.
SOFTBALL
Long Beach State 4, Santa Clara 0
The Broncos (2-4 overall) opened up action in the Long Beach State Tournament with a loss on Friday to the hosts, the 49ers. Junior infielder Vanessa Werner went 3-for-3 at the plate and senior Jaime Forman-Lau pitched six innings for Santa Clara, allowing only two runs.
San Diego State 6, Santa Clara 5
The Broncos started the second day of the Long Beach State Tournament with a hard fought game against the Aztecs. After trailing 3-0 early in the game, the Broncos (2-5 overall) exploded for three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Angela Kabanuck, Kate Goethals, Rachel Sherman, and Keri Reisinger were all 2-for-3 at the plate.
UCLA 4, Santa Clara 0
Sophomore pitcher Liz Courter allowed three runs on seven hits, while Werner had another impressive day at the plate going 2-for-3. The Broncos (2-6 overall) had two runners thrown out at home plate.
Washington 1, Santa Clara 0
The Broncos lost a close contest to the Huskies last Sunday in morning action of the Long Beach State Invitational. Forman-Lau pitched a complete game, while striking out nine batters and holding the Huskies to only six hits. Kabanuck and Goethals had the only base hits for Santa Clara, whose record fell to 2-7 overall.
Long Beach State 4, Santa Clara 0
Long Beach State jumped on Santa Clara (2-8 overall) for four runs in the first inning as the host 49ers concluded the Long Beach State Invitational. The Broncos managed five base hits, led by Clee's 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Courter picked up the loss for the Broncos, who return to action this weekend to compete at the Stanford Tournament in Palo Alto.
MEN'S TENNIS
San Francisco 4, Santa Clara 3
The Broncos (2-4 overall, 0-1 WCC) and Dons played a close conference match last Wednesday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Juniors Taylor Bedilion and Francisco Zepponi won tough, three-set matches in singles competition.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Santa Clara 4, San Francisco 3
The Broncos (1-2 overall) opened up West Coast Conference action last Friday in San Francisco with a close victory over the Dons. Freshmen Kelly Leathers and Jessie Strunk each won their matches in straight sets, and junior Catherine Cochrane and senior Sofia Wendt battled through three sets to win their respective matches.
Pacific 4, Santa Clara 3
Santa Clara dropped a close non-conference match last Saturday to drop their overall record to 1-3. The Broncos won the doubles point and picked up victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions from sophomore Casey Knutson and Strunk. The team will return to action this Saturday to host UC Riverside.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
California 21, Santa Clara 6
Santa Clara (3-1 overall) opened up action in the Stanford Tournament with a tough loss to the nationally-ranked Golden Bears. Sophomore Bryn Asher and junior Katy Shumm led the Broncos with two goals apiece, while freshmen Kellie Dunn and Katie Radvanyi each netted a goal apiece.
Hawaii 13, Santa Clara 5
The Broncos (3-2 overall) continued action in the Stanford Tournament with a loss to the Rainbows of Hawaii. Sophomore Alanna Simpkins scored two goals to lead the Broncos and Radvanyi, Dunn and freshman Kelsey Caulum also scored for Santa Clara. Senior Anne Ginotti had 14 blocks in goal to lead the defensive effort.
UCLA 13, Santa Clara 1
Santa Clara (3-3 overall) resumed action Sunday in the Stanford Tournament at Palo Alto, with a tough game against the top-ranked Bruins. Katy Shumm scored the Broncos lone goal with two minutes left in the fourth period to break up the shutout and Barnes had nine saves in goal.
San Jose State 11, Santa Clara 1
The Broncos (3-4 overall) lost their fourth straight game this weekend to conclude Stanford Tournament action. Junior Catherine Flynn scored the Broncos' only goal and Ginotti recorded 11 blocks and two steals in goal. Santa Clara will return to action next weekend to compete in the Slugfest Invitational at Santa Cruz.
MEN'S GOLF
SCU Spring Shootout
Senior Justin Ahasic's second place score of 76 helped pace the Broncos to victory on Monday at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Gilroy. Santa Clara defeated Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount in the one-day competition. Sophomore Michael Nicoletti and juniors Matt Klenz and John Colyar all finished in the top five overall.
