Santa Clara Men's Soccer Continues Impressive Season
The Santa Clara men's soccer team continued their impressive season in a thrilling draw against Pacific on Saturday night.
The match was a complete offensive display by both sides. The Broncos had 24 shots with nine on goal, while Pacific had 15 shots, 5 of which were on goal. Pacific was able to jump out to an early lead, scoring in the 25th minute, something opponents haven't done all season. Santa Clara had not conceded a goal in the first half this year prior to this match.
The score remained in favor of Pacific until the 56th minute, when Joshua Debora equalized the game with a fantastic volley from just outside the box.
The Broncos struck once again two minutes later when a header from Dominic Vegaalban found the back of the net. The lead would be short-lived, as Pacific would equalize the game three minutes later. The score remained level for the remainder of the match.
The Broncos have not lost a match in their past six outings, tallying four wins and two draws. They've also showcased significant offensive firepower totaling 54 shots, 21 on goal, and coming away with six goals.
Certainly, they would love to come away with more than six goals after taking 54 shots. We'll have to wait and see what adjustments, if any, the team decides to make to rectify this proportion of goals to shots taken.
Oladayo Thomas, a senior at Santa Clara, continues to shine this season as he tallied his 5th assist of the year. He entered the match atop the conference in goals (six), assists (four), and points (16).
The Broncos will look to continue this six-game-unbeaten streak as they host a non-conference match against Cal on Saturday, Oct 16 at 7 PM.
Santa Clara Men’s Golf finishes Ninth at Oregon State Invitational
The Santa Clara Men’s golf team finished ninth at the Oregon State Invitational, a two-day tournament in Corvallis, Oregon concluding on October 12.
The University of Washington cruised through the competition, carding a 14-under par to win the team title. Boise State came in second at 3-under par. They were the only two teams to finish under-par in a 14-team field.
For the Broncos, Berk Harvey led the team with a 1-over-par , which earned him a tie for 13th in single play. Konrad Brauckmeyer was the next closest, finishing at 15-over par Jak Avrit and Jlo Magcalayo were right behind at 16-over par. Rounding out the lineup was Oscar Zimmerman at 17-over par.
So far this fall, Santa Clara has participated in three invitationals, including a 13th place finish at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate and two 9th place finishes at The Paintbrush and Oregon State Invitationals.
The Broncos will look to close out the fall at the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Course in Pebble Beach, CA.
Women's Golf finish second at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational
The Santa Clara women's golf team fell just short of the team title at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday, October 12. They finished the two-day event with a 25-over-par (297-94-298). They were just four shots shy of Seattle, who carded a 21-over-total.
Claire Choi, Borina Sutikto and Olivia Venderby led the way for Santa Clara as they each individually placed in the top ten. Sutikto and Verderby had their best performances as Broncos. Sutikto carded a four-over par, netting her a tie for 5th place. Venderby was only two shots behind Sutikto at six-over par, placing her in a tie for 8th.
Impressive to note is that Santa Clara's 36-birdies led the field. They were also efficient on par-5 holes (two-over), with only Seattle and Utah Valley being better at even-par.
The women have had a solid fall 2021 campaign, placing top ten in each of their tournaments this year. They finished fifth at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, ninth at the Aggie Invitational, and of course, second at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational this week.
The Broncos will look to close the fall season at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, played in Kapolei, Hawai'i, from Oct. 25-27.
