Softball Storms Into 2020 Season

Broncos split in season opener at NorCal Classic in Sacramento

Santa Clara's weather isn't the only thing that's bringing on an early feeling of spring. Santa Clara softball's long awaited season kicked off last weekend with a win over Sacramento State and a close loss to UC Santa Barbara at the NorCal Classic Tournament.

In the first game of the day, the Broncos were edged by Santa Barbara's pitcher who allowed just seven hits and two walks. A bottom of the seventh rally almost brought the winning run to the plate, but the Gauchos held off Santa Clara's offense and won 2-0.

The second game of the day ended in a different fashion, as the Broncos offense woke up and scored seven to beat Sacramento State 7-4.

The alarm sounded from sophomore Emma Bickford who doubled to left in the third inning bringing in a run. The bases were loaded three batters later and junior Sarah Ellersick brought in a run with a fielder's choice. Sophomore Regan Dias picked up the win on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing only three hits.

The Broncos hit the road in another non-conference tournament at UC Riverside starting Friday, Feb. 14.
