Tennis teams shine, win three
By DAVID DUNCH
The Santa Clara men's and women's tennis teams finally saw some action last week, with the women picking up two wins and the men one.
On Friday, the women defeated Saint Mary's in Moraga 7-2, handing the Gaels their fourth consecutive loss. Once again, senior and No. 1 player Sarah Duncan led the way, beating her opponent 6-4, 6-0. Freshmen Christine Limbers, Mariko Kawakami and Pati Ruiz also picked up singles wins, as did senior Jodie Curran.
In doubles action, the teams of Kawakami-Limbers and freshman Ashley Campbell-Ruiz were victorious.
The Broncos followed that strong performance with another Saturday, beating Cal Poly SLO 7-2 at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center. The same five players from Friday's match - Duncan, Limbers, Kawakami, Ruiz and Curran - once again picked up singles wins, and the doubles teams of Kawakami-Limbers and Campbell-Ruiz won again.
The two victories improved their record to 4-3 on the season.
The men saw their record fall to 2-3 after a 6-1 win over UC-Santa Cruz at home Friday, followed by a 5-2 loss at Sacramento State on Monday. Against the Bananaslugs, the Broncos swept the singles action, as seniors Lars Nelson, Marcell Hlousek and Scott Watters, junior Matt Cox, and sophomores Eric Bachelor and Adam Artunian all won.
On Monday, only two of those Broncos found victory as Watters and Artunian won their singles matches. The doubles team of Hlousek and Nelson also won.
The women will be in action tomorrow as they take on the University of San Francisco at home. The matches start at 2 p.m. The men will also see action Friday, as they travel to Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos, followed by a match at Pepperdine on Saturday.
