The Passing of the Torch
Looking for an excuse to drink on a Tuesday without the hullabaloo of Hut Trivia?
Look no further.
A new generation must hop on their bikes, and preferably strap on their helmets to attend Park Station Hashery’s weekly rendezvous: Two Wheel Tuesday.
The event, which occurs weekly at the Hashery, about a mile from campus, entails individuals riding a bike or a board (or strolling up on their own two feet) for the reward of two beers (or ciders if that's your stride) for the price of one. This adds up to somewhere around $10 for two glasses of real beer, not the watery lukewarm slosh of Coors Light served at fraternities.
Friends and I feel that the event has seen a slow tapering off in collegiate customers since the departure of the previous senior class, though the weekly Santa Clara crowd waxes and wanes with various repeat–attendee groups crowding the event. As our senior year draws to a close, ensuring the longevity of the long-beloved tradition feels like a duty–plus it's no longer in my interest to gatekeep.
But beyond the promise of two local beers, far better than the usual canned goodness I get in the form of two tall boys at my local 7/11 for $6.33, Park Station Hashery has a really great selection of dinner entrees (unfortunately my refined palette means I’ve only sampled select dishes that only appeal to the mature–hot dogs and mac n’ cheese–but for those dishes I have had, and bites of my friends I’ve scavenged, the execution was phenomenal.)
Alternatively, you can take the day drinkers’ route to Two Wheel and visit after completing your classes (or before) and sit in the sun with a book or your laptop and enjoy leisurely getting some work done while sipping down some stout.
The Two Wheel deal is available all day, but many college-age patrons join somewhere around seven o’clock.
It's no secret that there are many ways to enjoy two beers for the price of one. It's even harder to detest your hops if you're sitting outside in the sun (or at sunset) with some friends, perhaps playing with a deck of cards or Bananagrams to bolster your evening out.
Two Wheel reframes what a Tuesday means. Last year, it afforded friends and me an excuse to purchase bikes under the guise of utilizing them to commute on- and off-campus–though many of us purchased with the intent of spending our Tuesday evenings biking home with a slight to moderate buzz.* It’s the promise of being outside, quietly socializing with close friends, or going out to casually chat with new people with the social lubricant of some suds.
