Last weekend was rough for the women's volleyball team, as it lost to both Pepperdine University Friday and to Loyola Marymount University Saturday.

The two losses not only dropped the Broncos to 4-3 in West Coast Conference play, 14-8 overall, but also marked the end of the team's six game home winning streak.

Pepperdine's tall middle blockers seemed to dominate the entire match Friday, especially the first two games. Santa Clara did not seem to show any desire to win until after the second game loss.

The Broncos then made a match of things, storming back to win the next two games before finally loosing the match 15-17, 11-15, 15-12, 15-13 and 9-15.

"Coach (Jon Wallace) said that this would prove our worth in the conference," senior Laura Raybould said. "And that we had to leave it on the court and put our all into the game."

Junior Ynez Carrasco had 23 kills, as did sophomore Brook Terhune, in the match against the Waves. Junior Amy Kohl had an impressive .474 hitting percentage for the match.

Junior Roz Pelayo had a match high of 91 assists against the Waves, setting a new match record for the Broncos.

Saturday's game against Loyola Marymount was not a good one for the Broncos either, as they lost in four games, 16-14, 5-15, 11-15 and 13-15.

The Lions held the Broncos to a low .163 hitting percentage, compared to their .330, and dominated defensively the whole match.

Carrasco added 15 kills against the Lions, and Terhune had 10.

The Broncos will be in action this weekend as they travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on conference rivals Portland on Friday and Gonzaga on Saturday.

The Broncos will have history on their side this weekend. They have won eight straight matches against both the Pilots and the Bulldogs.

"We have decided we need to start practicing with as much intensity as we play," Raybould said. "We are going to come into the gym and give it our all."
