Water Polo concludes homestand with tough loss
By Brian Betz
UC Davis has outscored Santa Clara by a 57-17 margin in women's water polo this season. Sunday's 19-5 pummeling notched the Aggies their third victory over the Broncos this year, and completes a season sweep that dates back to early February.
Sunday's loss was a disappointing follow-up to Saturday's key win over CS San Bernandino. A higher intensity and more physical play exerted by the Aggies gradually took its toll on the Broncos. The Aggies opened up a 9-4 advantage in the second period and tallied five more in the third to put the match out of reach by the fourth period. Throughout the disappointing 14-goal defeat, junior Kelley Mays managed to net a hat trick to lead the Broncos in scoring for the afternoon.
The loss to UC Davis came less than 24 hours after Santa Clara concluded their homestand with a win against the Coyotes of CS San Bernandino. Efficient power plays were the recipe for success in the 11-8 win. Five goals were netted on one-man advantages, while junior Becky Hong led all scorers with three, including the game winner in the fourth. Other juniors Carly Carpenter, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Mays powered the Santa Clara attack with three goals apiece.
