Web extra: Broncos make quarterfinals after penalty kicks win

By From Staff Reports

Santa Clara men's soccer advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournaments after defeating Indiana 5-4 in penalty kicks following a scoreless game.

Freshman Jeff Cosgriff scored the winning goal for the Broncos in the shootout, after goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta stopped the final to Hoosier shooters.

Indiana and Santa Clara scored in the first two rounds of the shootout, with goals by juniors Matt Hatzke and Peter Lowry.

In the third round, however, Indiana took the lead when the Hoosiers scored and Indiana goalkeeper Chay Cain stopped senior Erik Ustruck.

Both teams scored in the next round, with Santa Clara's goal from sophomore Jide Ogunbiyi. The Hooisers would have won had their final shooter, Brian Ackley, scored, but his shot rang off the post.

Sophomore Brian Martin then tied the score at 4 for the Broncos, forcing an extra round and seting the stage for Buttitta's final save and Cosgriff's winning kick.

The Broncos outshot Indiana 11-7 in the 0-0 game, which featured 26 fouls for the Broncos and 14 for the Hoosiers. Freshman Amaechi Igwe, senior Keith Devey and Ogunbiyi all received yellowcards, while Indiana had none.

The Broncos will now face Wake Forest in North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. The winner of that match will make the College Cup, which is in St. Louis, Mo., this year.
