Broncos Triumph Over San Diego

Mens basketball wins on the road before hosting No. 2 Gonzaga

After losing two of their last three games, Santa Clara Men’s Basketball earned a 65-52 road win against the University of San Diego (USD). The win improved the Broncos record to 17-5 overall, and 4-3 in the West Coast Conference (WCC).

Santa Clara was led by Josip Vrankic’s 20 points and 9 rebounds -- just one shy of a double-double. With Vrankic’s second consecutive big game, he became only the 35th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

The Broncos needed all they could get from Vrankic, as their 25 point lead in the second half quickly got too close for comfort. San Diego went on a 15-2 run to pull within 12 points halfway through the second half. During this run, head coach Herb Sendek called a timeout and allowed his players to recollect themselves for the final 9 minutes. The Broncos did just that.

“We played in the peaks and valleys in the second half,” exclaimed Coach Sendek. “But needless to say, after a tough loss Thursday night [against Pepperdine] it’s great to come on the road and get a win which is never easy.”

The Broncos will host No.2 Gonzaga on Thursday night and try to halt the Bulldogs current 13-game win streak.
