Men’s Tennis Opens Season With Split Games 1-1

This past weekend, Santa Clara Men’s Tennis went 1-1 with a win over UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Regionals in Southern California. On Saturday, the Broncos were led by freshman Nick Cmager in a deciding match on court six against UCSB. Searching for their first win of the season, Santa Clara relied on Cmager in a winner-take-all match after UCSB had evened the score at 3-3.

In the first set of his game, Cmager failed to win a game -- losing 0-6. He responded by two consecutive set wins and clinched the Broncos first victory of the young season as the team narrowly defeated UCSB with a final score of 4-3

After their win on Saturday, Santa Clara could not maintain their momentum against #3 ranked powerhouse, University of Southern California (USC). USC played the weekend on their home courts, and their deep lineup currently consists of five players ranking in the top-64 -- including the number one player in the nation. USC defeated Santa Clara 4-0 including Saturday’s hero, Cmager, losing in straight sets. Santa Clara will travel north to take on Oregon and Portland State this weekend on February 1-2.
