Board of Trustees approves Business School construction, new majors
The Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed beginning construction on the new Business School building, one of three items the board approved Friday, according to an e-mail from University President Paul Locatelli, S.J.
The construction will begin this month, though funding for the business school has not been completed. The Executive Committee of the board noted that there is some risk in beginning construction early, but the board has confidence the fundraising goal will be reached, especially due to the efforts of the Business School advisory board and "Friends of Don Lucas," the e-mail said.
The Board of Trustees also approved two new majors: accounting and information systems in the School of Business and biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Also approved was the new proposed core curriculum (see story, page 4).
Clinton's Chief of Staff final speaker scheduled in President's Series
Former President Clinton's Chief of Staff and university alumnus Leon Panetta, '60, will speak next Thursday, May 31, about his participation in the Iraq Study Group and the events that have transpired since the group's recommendations.
Panetta is the last scheduled speaker of the Presidential Speaker Series, a five-part series of lectures featuring various university alumni and other noteworthy speakers.
Only two of the five lectures have thus far gone on without problems. In April, Ayaan Hirsi Ali cancelled the event after missing her flight to Los Angeles, university spokeswoman Deepa Arora said. The May 10 event that included speakers Jules Daly, Andrew Dominik and Ron Hansen has been postponed indefinitely.
Next Thursday's event with Leon Panetta, titled "Is There a Light at the End of the Tunnel?" begins at 7:30 p.m. in Leavey Center. Panetta also teaches one political science course a year at Santa Clara and runs the Panetta Institute, which holds its own lecture series at California State University Monterey Bay.
