Santa Clara Men’s Soccer Team Continues to Flourish
Third consecutive win improves Broncos to 6-1 start
The Santa Clara Men’s soccer team captured its 3rd straight victory with a 2-0 win over Dixie State University on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos opened up the score late in the first half with Murphy’s first tally in a Bronco uniform. Santa Clara added to their lead early in the second half with a header by Dylan Bartlett, his second goal in as many appearances. Dixie State had an opportunity to cut the Broncos’ lead in half in the 71st minute, but Tony Foulger's header struck the crossbar.
The Broncos maintained their stellar shot accuracy (51 percent), ranking them fourth in the nation. They finished the match with 13 shots, 7 of which were on goal (54 percent). Most importantly for Santa Clara, a different Bronco has scored the game-winning goals in each of its wins this year, demonstrating the team’s versatile roster. Dominic Vegaalban scored the game-winner against Cal Poly, Javier Ruiz Duran against Sacramento State, Oladayo Thomas in the American game, Eduardo Lopez Perez against UC San Diego, and DylanBartlett against Houston Baptist.
The Broncos are now 6-1 in the season and will look to continue their impressive season on the road against Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at Titan stadium.
No. 11 Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 10 Stanford; drop to 3-3-2 on the season.
The Santa Clara women’s soccer team dropped its second straight game on Sunday against No.10 Stanford in Palo Alto. The Broncos jumped to a very early 1-0 lead off a goal from Izzy D’Aquila in the third minute, her second of the year, but their lead did not last long. Stanford struck late in the first half to tie the game at one. The match continued to be evenly played until the 75th minute, when Amy Sayer gave Stanford the lead with a header. The Cardinals would go on to score an insurance marker in the 84th minute to hand Santa Clara a 3-1 loss. The Broncos are now 20-24-8 all-time against the Cardinals.
Although they did not come away with a victory, the Santa Clara women’s soccer team competed toe-to-toe with Stanford, putting up 11 shots (eight of them on goal) to the Trees’ ten. The difference came in the execution of those shots. Stanford’s goalkeeper, Katie Meyers, managed to make seven saves to the Broncos and Kylie Foutch’s three.
In the past two games, the Broncos have had plenty of opportunities but failed to capitalize on them — like they did so often last year on their way to a College Cup Championship. SCU have attempted a total of 30 shots in their past two matches with 17 coming on goal. The problem is they’ve only scored once in these losses.
Now sitting at 3-3-2, the Broncos have dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season. They will look to bounce back next on Saturday September 25 against San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium, with kickoff expected to start at 7 pm.
