Sports Question of the Week
What’s the greatest comeback in sports?
2015-16 Cleveland Cavaliers - Bo Kendall The Cleveland Cavaliers comeback from down 3-1 to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals was nothing short of incredible. The Warriors were one win away from becoming the greatest sports team of all time, culminating their 73-9 record with a title. Game 7 was one of the most epic matchups in sports history. LeBron’s chase down block of Andre Iguodala epitomized the Warriors loss of glory: it looked like they had broken away, just to have it snatched away out of nowhere. The budding rivalry between Cleveland and Golden State has gotten more interesting since the Warriors addition of Kevin Durant and is heading toward another dynastic showdown in 2017. 2004 Boston Red Sox - Andrew Slap New England fans will surely point to the Patriots 25-point comeback win over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, but the way the Red Sox somehow overcame a 0-3 deficit against the New York Yankees was even more miraculous. The Patriots had some luck on their side (Julian Edelman’s catch) and had the benefit of idiotic decision-making by the Atlanta coaching staff. The Red Sox had no gifts of that sort from the Evil Empire. Instead they had to rely on the bloody ankle of Curt Schilling, speed of Dave Roberts and heroics of David Ortiz. The Patriots comeback took Atlanta by storm—the Falcons looked stunned and had no time to recollect themselves. But the Yankees had four different opportunities to close out Boston but the Red Sox kept fighting and broke the Curse of the Bambino.
